Becky speaks in the House of Lords

In September 2008 one of our learners, Becky Foster, was invited to speak at the House of Lords, to Peers, ministers, MPs and leading figures from industry, about her experience of learning at Inverteign Family Learning Centre and how it had changed her life.
Becky has gained qualifications in Literacy, Numeracy, ICT and has gone on the complete a NVQ in childcare.

Lord Dearing congratulated Becky, both on her speech and her achievements. He was impressed by all Becky had to say about the effect of adult learning on her life, and said the she very much reminded him of Princess Diana on her first speaking engagement; she was just as pretty and just as good.

Our Centre was involved in a special research project to monitor how people are affected by having access to the internet. The research project was known ‘affectionately’ as SID – the Social Impact Demonstrators project.

We were one of 20 projects running across the country and we aimed to measure the impact of introducing people to the benefits of being online and using ICT. Together with 3 other Centres in the South- West we focused on the impact of the internet on family learning and people living in rural areas. We aimed to reach people who are excluded form internet use and / or on low incomes.
