Meet more of our Learners

Jess – A case study
I am one of the original learners that came to Inverteign Family Learning Centre back in about 2002 when it opened. I had no experience of ICT, apart from using it as a typewriter, and only a couple of GCSE’s from my time at school.
At that time my children were aged 1, 4, and 7 so the free crèche the centre offered was a God send.I used to call in when the crèche was running to type up minutes from committees I was on and for a cup of tea and a chat with the friendly staff there.
|
I was always sceptical about using computers for more than typing, but one day I must have been feeling brave because I booked myself in on a “Keep Your Child Safe on the Internet Course”. Since then I have never looked back, it was a real turning point for me. |
The qualifications I have gained are -
Level 1 ICT
Level 2 ICT
Level 2 Literacy and communication
Level 3 Certificate in Adult Literacy Subject Support.
In 2004 I went to Dawlish Community College Adult education and sat an AS and A level in English, I did all my course work on the computers at the Learning Centre and I received so much help and support it was unbelievable. I passed the exams but unfortunately only with a C and D respectively but it was an experience!
In 2006 I received the award for outstanding achievement for qualifying as a literacy tutor at the Inverteign Family Learning Centre's award giving. (Just to blow the Centre's trumpet for a moment over 200 learners received certificates that afternoon. WHAT AN ACHEIVEMENT!) I was chuffed to bits with my award; my husband had come along so it was really lovely.
So we are in 2007 and I now teach at the Centre that gave me so much support and guidance. I am at present teaching on an Internet for beginners course and do card making workshops. I am very passionate about helping other young parents to gain some adult qualifications, they can then use their knowledge to help their children through school, gain employment or just simply to boost their self confidence.
My husband runs his own business and last year I started doing his accounts on Excel, all this thanks to walking into Inverteign Family Learning Centre 4 years ago.
